The stormy Southern Ocean and relentless winds gradually eroded the softer limestone of the coastline, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and, when they collapsed, rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. One of the most spectacular coastlines in the world is under continuous transformation. Only 8 of the original 12 Apostles are still standing now.
