We begin our journey just outside Calgary, in Chestermere, where the bride still resides in the morning of the wedding.
The founder of Sikhism, and the first of the ten Sikh gurus, oversees all the preparations:
Suman is now ready to say 'I do'.
Meanwhile, Raj spends the morning in his hotel room:
With or without the sehra, the groom looks royal.
The white horse can only improve that aspect during the baraat:
Suman's family is waiting for them in front of the gurdwara:
After the milni, everyone is a little hungry and a light breakfast, consisting of everything deep fried, fixes the temporary problem:
With full stomachs, we're ready for the 1 hour long Ceremony of Bliss.
In the balcony, there's someone who is not very happy with the direction things are headed to, but it's too late now:
Suman: "When I first met Raj, I came home and told my sister he was exactly like me. One of two things was going to happen: either we were going to crash and burn or fall madly in love, get married and live happily ever after. Sure enough, three months later I was ready to say 'I love you' and my sister thought I had lost my mind. A few months after that she helped him set up the proposal in the Cayman Islands. Now they're both best friends and conspire against me, and I got my Happily Ever After."
Raj: "Love at first sight! Since the day we met, Suman has kept me on my toes. Two bodies, one soul!"
Back at Suman's home, the Doli Jeopardy, Chestermere edition, is about to begin:
The first challenge is a dance, which doesn't seem to be a challenge at all for Raj and his mates:
Now, this is where it gets tricky. For the next challenge, the groom and his best man have to eat four gulab jamuns each. Everybody, including me, is expecting that the sweets were tainted with some kind of lethal poison like habanero sauce. But no. Basically, they are offered money to eat perfectly delicious gulab jamuns. At this point, the good charitable person in me feels like jumping in and helping:
They pass this gruesome challenge in style and they hardly refrain from asking for more:
Raj still has to pay some money in order to gain access to his new wife:
On his way in, Suman's family manages to ambush him and steal his high prized juttis.
Time to say goodbye and leave.
Suman's brothers push the car while Raj's father showers them with money needed for the road to Edmonton:
Next day, in the capital of Alberta:
All dressed up, with a big party to go to.
Everybody is waiting for mamaji and mamiji at the Meridian Banquet Hall:
First things first.
Tears and laughter mix together during the speeches.
The boys from the Nachda Punjab Bhangra Academy know how to set up the mood for the night.
Last speech of the festivities:
DJ Palay is taking over for the rest of the night. We're in good hands, even if they are all in air:
Some of the guests are too old for these crazy parties:
But most of them are having the time of their lives on the dance floor:
Congratulations one more time, Suman and Raj! Thank you so much for everything!
