It's a winter morning in Edmonton and January seems like a good time to start the 2017 wedding season.
I'm sure Jasmine doesn't need that much makeup, but MUA Riti Jain comes prepared:
There's a short religious ceremony before we leave the bride's house:
Well, it looks like Jasmine was easier to impress than his friends:
There's no pink t-shirt today.
Brandon cleans up so well, his best man can't handle it:
Here's a little bit of fascinating religious history, as Wikipedia teaches us.
In the 16th century, the overtures of the Portuguese padroado to bring the Saint Thomas Christians into the Latin Rite Catholicism led to the first of several rifts in the community and the establishment of Catholic and Malankara Church factions. Since then further splits have occurred, and the Saint Thomas Christians are now divided into several fragments: Eastern Catholic, Church of the East, Oriental Orthodox, Protestant and Reformed Syrians, each with their own liturgies and traditions.
During 16th century, the Portuguese Jesuits began deliberate attempts to annex the native Christians to the Catholic Church, and in 1599 they succeeded through the Synod of Diamper. Resentment against these forceful measures led the majority of the community under the Archdeacon Thomas to swear an oath never to submit to the Portuguese, known as the Coonan Cross Oath, in 1653. The Malankara Church consolidated under Mar Thoma I welcomed Gregorios Abdal Jaleel, who regularized the canonical ordination of Mar Thoma as a Bishop.
Meanwhile, the Dutch East India Company defeated the Portuguese in supremacy of the spice trade in Malabar in 1663. The Malankara church used this opportunity to escape from Catholic persecution with the Dutch East India Company's help. At the request of the Malankara Church, the Dutch brought Gregorios Abdal Jaleel of Jerusalem, a Syrian Orthodox Church Bishop, in their trading vessel in 1665. Mar Thoma I forged a relationship with the Syriac Orthodox Church and gradually adopted West Syrian liturgy and practices.
It's a captivating sacrament of the holy matrimony, but not for all age groups:
The ceremony ends with the unity candle being lit and the official signatures.
Oh, and a proper kiss as husband and wife:
How Brandon declares his love towards his new wife: "I used to order salads with my meals when I went out for dinner, now I have to order fries."
It's getting too hot inside the City Hall, so we move outside for a refreshing snowball fight:
By the end of the photoshoot, the boys feel rather inspired and want to create some designs of their own. It's a commendable group effort:
On the same subject - creativity - the banquet hall at Fantasyland Hotel is ready for the reception:
Guests leave lots of messages from the heart:
There's also a cowbell that's supposed to be used for romantic purposes, but we'll get back to that:
For the second time today, here's the newest couple in town:
Jeremiah and Kim take their MC jobs seriously from the start.
First dance of the night belongs to Brandon and his mom:
Followed by Jasmine and her dad, under her mother's emotional eyes:
During dinner, the cowbell gets a lot of attention. Whoever wants the newlyweds to kiss, they have to kiss first, while ringing the bell:
Works every time, even though the bride is still a little shy:
The ladies from Jasmine's family prepared a colourful performance.
No talent is too young to participate:
At this age, a big advantage is the lack of inhibitions:
Speeches come mixed with toasts and all kinds of emotions.
Congratulations one more time, Jasmine and Brandon! Thank you so much for my first wedding of 2017.

Jasmine: "We started out as acquaintances before ever dating. He thinks I fell in love at first sight when he walked out of the gym in a fitted pink t-shirt. He was wrong that day. But wasn't too far after that I did :)
People would say we're polar opposites and I guess for a lot of things we are. But when it comes to the important things like family and faith, we stand United."

Here's a little bit of fascinating religious history, as Wikipedia teaches us.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as Indian Orthodox Church, is an autocephalous Oriental Orthodox church centered in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the churches of India's Saint Thomas Christian community, which has its origin in the evangelical activity of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. The church is headed by the autocephalous Catholicos of the East and the Malankara Metropolitan, presently Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II.
It is believed that Saint Thomas Christians of Malabar were in communion with the Church of the East from 496 to 1599. Thereafter, the Christians of Saint Thomas were influenced by many beliefs at different times. These influences later resulted in serious rifts and the breakdown of the monolithic apostolic church into different fragments under different faith streams. They were organised as a Church in the 8th century, served by foreign bishops and led by a hereditary local chief called an Archdeacon.
Saint Thomas Christians were administratively under the single native dynastic leadership of an Archdeacon - അർക്കദിയൊക്കൊൻ (no, I don't speak or write Malayalam, I just used copy/paste) and were in communion with the Church of the East, centered in Persia, from at least 496. The indigenous Church of Malabar/Malankara followed the faith and traditions handed over by the Apostle St. Thomas.
