We are back in Calgary for five days of Punjabi wedding celebrations, starting with the engagement party, aka the chunni ceremony:
Sangeeta Virmani is always a gracious host at the Magnolia banquet hall:
Mandeep takes over the dance floor and he's not gonna stop till the end of the week.
Trust me, as a photographer, it's a rare achievement to capture an untouched tray of shots in the middle of a Punjabi party. I'm that good:
Well, it's gotta be some physics law, because the more alcohol goes in, the more money flies out.
Recently engaged, Karen can get her mehndi done the next day:
Following tradition, the jaago is taken to the streets.
A big fan of Calgary Flames will soon get an intense makeup session:
Jaago again, in a different corner of the city:
On the third day is Karen's turn to change colors:
Choora is the last ritual before the wedding day:
The fourth day shines through exquisite jewelry and impeccable makeup:
For the second time this week, Bogdan is at the groom's house:
Mandeep is ready to take on the world:
And he has the friends and family to help him:
Soon enough everybody is waiting for the bride, inside the gurdwara.
Definitely worth the wait:
The Anand Karaj - Ceremony of Bliss - is underway and the palla ritual is the most emotional of them all:
Outside, in the tent, the shagun is full of surprises:
The first target is the groom, who is left barefoot by the maids of honor:
And if that was not distressing enough, the torrential rain floods completely the whole place:
We have to hide in the SAIT parkade for some pictures:
This is the part where the groom comes to the bride's place to claim her.
Chronologically, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it sure is a lot of fun:
As a matter of fact, the fun began way before, in the party bus:
I'm sure Mandeep is gonna miss this whole 'groom' thing. He barely touched the ground the whole week:
Ruthless negotiations commence and there's nothing the boys won't sacrifice to make sure Mandeep goes home with the love of his life.
They even form a human pyramide and all I can think of is 'I need friends like this':
Their efforts were fruitful and Karen leaves her family behind:
Only to be welcomed in her new family.
I can barely recognize my couple in the fifth day:
Karen and Mandeep: "On our first date, we went from dinner, coffee, a walk, and then for a drive. It was as if we both didn't want this date to end. We were introduced to each other through a mutual friend and there was an instant connection and a comfort level from the first time we met...
...We did not have the luxury of seeing each other whenever we wanted to, since we were doing long distance. So this meant lots of planning, traveling, but most importantly, making memories with each other. We feel that the distance allowed us to get to know one another even better and made us stronger in the end....
...Both of us are very different people, from our hobbies to our personalities, but we are each other's missing puzzle piece in our lives. We can't wait for what the future holds and spending the rest of our lives together as one!"
But first, let's party at the Empire Banquet hall:
The wedding circle is now complete, as the newlyweds conclude the festivities in the same place where they started, on the dance floor, surrounded by family and friends:
And cash, let's not forget about the cash:
Congratulations one more time, Karen and Mandeep! Thank you so much for an awesome week!
